Hiring Philosophy

We believe that the structure of our firm, our approach to the practice of law and the type of friends and clients that we represent and advise, attract talented, entrepreneurial and forward thinking lawyers who work together to achieve superior results for those friends and clients who count on us in their complex and critically important situations.  

Those are the persons that we want to join Smith Hurst. With that in mind, we hire those attorneys who we expect can become partners of the firm. While there is no predetermined hiring target, persons who we believe possess this characteristic typically have an outstanding academic achievement record (often with Law Review experience), are well-rounded and are committed to excellence in the practice of law.  We are also impressed by those persons who worked while in school and at least partially funded the cost of their education.  We also place importance and emphasis on having a diverse group of lawyers from all walks of life.

We are committed to providing our attorneys with a level of compensation (including base salary and year-end bonuses) that is higher than that of any comparable firm. The benefits we offer also reflect this commitment, including full payment of premiums for comprehensive medical, group life and dental insurance plans, participation in our 401(k) retirement plan and payment of relocation expenses for those attorneys that are not located in Northwest Arkansas. 

We are committed to deliberate and careful growth and will maintain a steady course.  As an exceedingly busy and sought after firm, we are able to be selective in the work that we accept, which allows us to accept the best quality work available to us. As a result, we are and always will be engaged in actively recruiting attorneys who meet our qualifications.  Simply put, we have first class clients, are a “Best of Class” law firm and are looking only for those special lawyers to join us for the long term that possess the same traits and desires that are shared by our lawyers.  

As an emerging law firm, we have an unusual partner-to-associate ratio as compared to other law firms to which we are compared for purposes of being retained to provide legal services.  This ratio provides each associate the opportunity to work directly with partners in an informal and non-structured atmosphere that encourages hands-on training and the development of close working relationships among lawyers of the firm and with clients.  We are, in fact, proud of the fact that our associates have significant responsibility and client contact and are more compensated than comparable firms.
